I am a US citizen, am I able to leave the US to South America without a passport?

I am 20 years old and I want to travel, can I leave the US without a passport? I have been told that I can, is that true? If so, to what extent?

  1. From teterboro:

You are a US citizen and in order to be allowed into another country you need a passport. Even between Mexico and the US there is a border, that’s where they check people’s passports.

  2. From air:

New passport rules are that all US citizens need a passport for reentry into the US, not to mention getting into the other country.

Used to be just a drivers licence and secondary ID was okay for travel to Canada and back into the US. The new rules say this isn’t okay for even Canada visits anymore.

  4. From Mr Environmental Engineer:

No chance, you will not even be allowed to check in at the airport.

And the fine print says that the airline doesn’t have to refund your money if you don’t have the appropriate travel documents.
